Perryman Responds to Governor’s Education EO

OKLAHOMA CITY – Minority Floor Leader David Perryman, D-Chickasha, released the following statement today regarding Gov. Kevin Stitt’s plan to combine the Secretary of Education cabinet position with the Secretary of State position.

“The Governor announced that his administration will focus on education and that this appointment is proof of that,” Perryman said. “I don't see the logic in combining the duties of the Governor's education adviser with the duties of the Oklahoma Secretary of State. Logic would lead one to believe that if the Governor intended to focus on education, he would provide additional resources rather than decreasing the amount of time that his adviser will have to help solve problems facing Oklahoma’s education system. We need more voices with public education experience at the table, not less. I respect Secretary of State Michael Rogers. I served in the State Legislature with Secretary Rogers, but his background is in private education. I am concerned that there are becoming fewer and fewer advocates for public education among the governor’s advisers.”
